ROCHESTER, NY –Freshman Andrew Gengler scored three times in the first 10 minutes of the game and sophomore Colin Brickwood added a pair of goals to lead the Nazareth College men's soccer team to a convincing 9-0 victory over Villa Maria in a non-conference match Monday afternoon at Golden Flyer Stadium.
Gengler opened the scoring just 33 seconds into the contest and then added his second goal five minutes later as Nazareth (2-0) jumped to an early lead.
Villa Maria (0-3) was fielding a team of just 11 players and played a man down for a majority of the second half due to injury. The Vikings were nearly down a pair of players after an equipment malfunction but Brickwood loaned his backup cleats to the Villa Maria player that allowed him to stay in the game.
The great show of sportsmanship for Brickwood was not the only one of the game. Later in the second half a ball sent into the box led to a collision between Brickwood and Villa Maria goalie Santiago Aguirre. Both players went down on the play but Brickwood recovered and helped the goalie to his feet and congratulated him on a good save.
Nazareth built a 6-0 lead in the first half as sophomore Zein Mohamed, freshman Dylan Rippe and Brickwood each added goals. In the second half, sophomore Sam Smyth, junior Connor Mann and Brickwood each scored to seal the victory. Eight different players had one assist each for the Golden Flyers as Rippe, Smyth, sophomore Justin James, junior Dan Serpe, freshman Diamond Weah, sophomore Glenn Ramos along with seniors Dereck France and Francesco Viavattene each handed out assists.
The Golden Flyers held a 35-1 advantage in shots with senior Brian Wilkin and junior Josh McNutt combining for the shutout.
Nazareth returns to action Wednesday night with another home game as Wells College comes to town for a 7 pm game on the artificial turf field.
