Flyers drop heartbreaker to Baldwin Wallace, 1-0

Box
ERIE, Pa. -- Baldwin Wallace recorded the game-winning goal with just 15 seconds remaining in regulation play Saturday to send Nazareth to a disappointing 1-0 women's soccer defeat in the championship game of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament hosted by Penn State Behrend.

As the closing seconds ticked away, the Yellow Jackets were awarded a corner kick and, after a scramble in front of the Nazareth goal, BW's Maddie Farrell kicked a shot past Nazareth goalkeeper Hannah Miller and into the goal to propel the Yellow Jackets to their second win of the weekend. Kenna Poptic was credited with an assist.

Nazareth is 1-1 following the weekend split, which included a 3-0 win over Penn State Behrend on Friday. BW is 2-0.

The loss was disappointing in that Nazareth probably had the better of the play for most of the game. The Golden Flyers had a 10-5 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

Nazareth had six shots in the first half, the best coming off the foot of freshman Madison Knowles, whose left-footed bid grazed the left goal post in the 27th minute.

The Golden Flyers continued to pressure in the second half. Sophomore Ashley Plane had a shot in the 65th minute that was saved by BW keeper Emma Bruno. Then with less than 15 minutes left in regulation, a free kick by sophomore Mia Longo deflected off the crossbar, thwarting yet another opportunity.

Baldwin Wallace's chances were limited with the only corner kick coming in the closing seconds and resulting in the only tally. Miller was able to deflect the ball away initially, but Farrell was able to score off the rebound.

Nazareth is off until Saturday when the Golden Flyers play their home opener against St. Lawrence at 2:30 p.m.
