CORTLAND, NY – The Nazareth College women's volleyball team opened the season with a pair of losses Friday as the Golden Flyers fell in four sets to Baldwin Wallace and in three sets to SUNY Oneonta at the 35th Annual Cortland Red Dragon Volleyball Classic in Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium in Cortland.
In the opening match, the Golden Flyers rebounded from a first set loss to win the second but dropped the next two sets to fall 3-1. Baldwin Wallace won the match – 25-16, 15-25, 25-18, 25-16. In the evening match for Nazareth, Oneonta earned a close win in the second set and went on to sweep the Golden Flyers. Oneonta won the match – 25-20, 27-25, 25-9.
In the opening match, senior Melissa Newcomb recorded 11 kills and fellow senior Jessica Barry added 26 assists. Three players had double-digit digs as Sophomore McKenzie Hart led the way with 21 while Barry and senior Delaney Martin each chipped in 10. Senior Danielle Synowski served five aces and added eight digs for Nazareth.
Against Oneonta, Newcomb led Nazareth with seven kills and Barry handed out 17 assists. Hart led the defense with 17 digs while Martin added 12 for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth will face Stockton at 12:30 pm and finish the weekend tournament against SUNY Canton at 3 pm.
