ERIE, Pa. -- Nazareth scored three times in the first half Friday and went on to win its season opener in women's soccer, blanking host Penn State Behrend, 3-0 in the first round of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament.
It was the first meeting between the two teams in women's soccer since 2000 and the victory lifted Nazareth into Saturday evening's championship match against the winner of the second game between Baldwin Wallace and Kenyon.
Sophomore
Ashley Plane put Nazareth on the board in the 11th minute with an unassisted tally after dribbling down the right side of the field.
Less than 10 minutes later, junior midfielder
Caleigh Cahoon scored from the right corner after lofting a shot of the head of Lions' keeper Morgan Harding.
The Golden Flyers connected again in the 38th minute as sophomore
Morgan Siewert delivered her second career goal as she converted a cross from freshman
Sarah Merriwether, who was positioned on the endline.
Nazareth had a 13-7 edge in shots and had seven corner kicks to one for the home team.
Senior
Hannah Miller didn't need to make a single save in gaining credit for the shutout, the 17th of her career.
