Box Score WEEHAWKEN, N.J. – A run scoring double in the bottom of the 10th inning by Alfred was the difference as the Nazareth College softball team dropped a 3-2 decision in extra innings Saturday afternoon at Weehawken Waterfront Park. The loss eliminated the Golden Flyers from the Empire 8 Tournament.
Alfred (21-19) advanced and will face Stevens in an elimination game later Saturday.
The Saxons scored first with a single run in the first inning and then took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning with another single run.
Nazareth (14-22) tied the game with one swing of the bat by senior Madison Joseph in the sixth inning. Sophomore Janelle Walters singled to start the inning and moved to second on a ground out. With two outs, Joseph stepped to the plate and belted her team-leading seventh home run of the season over the centerfield fence on the first pitch of the at bat.
Nazareth turned a double play to get out of a jam in the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings. Alfred had a runner on base with a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. The next batter popped out to right field and freshman Sarah Simmons made the catch near the line and then made a perfect throw to sophomore Katherine Ruoff at third base who applied the tag to complete the double play and end the inning.
Sophomore Gabriella Corasaniti tossed the complete game as she scattered 10 hits with three walks and one strikeout.
Alfred scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning with a leadoff single and two stolen bases before a double to the warning track in centerfield allowed the winning run to score.
