WEEHAWKEN, N.J. – A strong pitching performance by sophomore Gabriella Corasaniti was overshadowed by the Nazareth College softball team being limited to just one hit is a 1-0 loss to Stevens Institute Friday in the first round of the Empire 8 Tournament at the Weehawken Waterfront Park.
Nazareth (14-21) will play Alfred University at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the double-elimination tournament hosted by Stevens.
The lone Nazareth hit came in the sixth inning when sophomore Mackenzie Kapp singled to right field with one out but Stevens (22-17) relief pitcher Marissa Cappello was able to strike out he next two batters to end the scoring threat.
The Golden Flyers also had a base runner in the second inning when senior Madison Joseph reached base with a leadoff walk. She was erased with a fielder's choice play as junior Kristen Simmons hit a ground ball to the infield.
Stevens scored the only run of the game in the second inning with a leadoff double and two straight ground outs that advanced the runner eventually to home.
Corasaniti pitched the complete game and did not walk a batter while striking out three and allowing just three hits.
