ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth scored the first seven goals of the game and were never seriously challenged thereafter as the Golden Flyers went on to take a 16-7 women's lacrosse victory over Hartwick Saturday.
The Empire 8 Conference win enabled the Golden Flyers to improve to 6-5 overall and 3-1 in conference action. Hartwick dipped to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in the E8.
Freshman
Emma Robinson and sophomore
Callahan Lyon each scored three times for the Golden Flyers, while freshman
Phoebe Barnett and senior
Kellie Byrne each netted a pair of goals. Juniors
Lily Aldrich contributed a goal and four assists and
Addilys Geitner had one goal and three assists..
Robinson scored all three of her goals before the game was seven minutes old as Nazareth was in the midst of building its early lead. The first goal came on a free-position shot. Geitner scored just 21 seconds later and had assists on the next two goals -- one by Robinson and one bny Lyon. Another goal by Robinson made the score 5-0, then goals by
Emily Allen and Lyon extended the lead to 7-0.
After Hartwick broke the shutout, Byrne scored late in the half off a pass from
Jordan Knapp as the Golden Flyers took a commanding 8-1 lead into the halftime break.
A goal by Knapp made the score 9-1 early in the second half, but Hartwick countered with a three-goal flurry within a span of 2:39 to close within 9-4.Â
Nazareth pulled away with a five-goal flurry over a five-minute stretch that ended with the Golden Flyers on top 14-4. Five different players scored during the run -- Byrne, Aldrich, Lyon,
Emma Parry and Barnett. The last 10 minutes featured a goal and an assist for Barnett and the first career goal for freshman
Hannah Dlugosz.
Nazareth had a 34-22 edge in shots and a 20-19 advantage in ground balls. Aldrich, Dylan Hogan and
Lauren Caldwell each had three ground balls and Robinson and Caldwell each had three draw controls.
Senior
Brianna Rizzari started in goal and had nine saves while allowing four goals. Freshmen
Madison Fox and
Emma Prosak played the last 15 minutes.
Nazareth returns to action Wednesday for a non-league contest the University of Rochester at 4 p.m.
