Nazareth dominates Utica, 23-5

Golden Flyers (4-8 overall) host Stevens Saturday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth outscored Utica 10-1 in the third quarter Saturday to break open a close game as the Golden Flyers took a 23-5 men's lacrosse victory in Empire 8 Conference action.

The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Golden Flyers, who improved to 4-8 overall and 2-2 in the E8. Utica dropped to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in conference games.

Junior Kevin Hussey and fresman Matthew Vanliew each scored five goals for the Golden Flyers, who had sizeable statistical advantages in shots (58-18), ground balls (55-27) and face-offs (25-6). Sophomore Jeremy Jacob contributed three goals and four assists and Colin McElligott and Jon Parrinello each scored twice.

Nazareth led 5-1 after one quarter, but Utica scored the first three goals of the second period to slice the lead to 5-4. Nazareth answered in decisive fashion by scoring the next 13 goals -- bridging the second and third quarters -- to go up 18-4. Hussey scored three straight goals and Parrinello scored off an assist from Jacob just four seconds before halftime to give Nazareth a 9-4 advantage.

Nazareth dominated the third quarter by outshooting Utica 17-3, winning 10 of 12 face-offs and forcing eight Utica turnovers. Vanliew scored four times in the third period for the Golden Flyers, who also got goals from Hussey, McElligott, Jacob, Parrinello, Jacob Edmands and Anthony Basile.

Nazareth also controlled play in the fourth period with goals from McElligott and Jacob as well as Drew McNerney and Dakota Allis.

The Golden Flyers received strong face-off play from junior Tim Vinton (16-for-19) and freshman Jared Miglorie (9-for-12), who combined to win 25 draws. Vinton had a game-high 11 ground balls.

Freshman Eric Almquist started in goal and made four saves. Alex Winkler played most of the third quarter and was credited with one save. David Walk played in the fourth quarter and had two saves.

Nazareth is off this week, but returns to action Saturday to host Stevens at 1 p.m.
