ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Stevens outscored Nazareth 10-4 in the second half Saturday to break open a close game as the Ducks went on to defeat the Golden Flyers, 19-11, in an Empire 8 Conference men's lacrosse game at Golden Flyer Stadium.
The Ducks, ranked 11th nationally by the USILA, won for the ninth straight time to improve to 12-2 overall and 5-0 in conference play. Nazareth dropped to 4-9 overall and 2-3 in the E8.
Freshman
Matthew Vanliew scored three goals and added two assists for Nazareth and junior
Kevin Hussey contributed two goals and two assists. Stevens got six goals from Eric Radbourne and two goals and five assists from Max Bailey.
Nazareth won 11 of 18 first-half face-offs and was able to hang tough with the Ducks in the first 30 minutes or so. Stevens led 5-3 early in the second quarter before Nazareth responded with three straight goals --
Jon Lippert,
Jon Parrinello and Hussey -- to take a 6-5 lead with 7:46 to go in the half. The Ducks countered by scoring three times in a span of 1:26 to regain the lead for good at 8-6. Vanliew scored for Nazareth off a pass from Hussey to make it 8-7, but Stevens scored again late in the half to go up 9-7 at the break.
Vanliew scored again, his third goal of the game, in the opening minute of the third quarter, but Stevens pulled away by scoring eight straight goals between the third and fourth quarters to gain an insurmountable 17-8 advantage. The Ducks' scoring run was fueled by the play of goalie Carson White, who made nine of his 15 saves in the third quarter while limiting Nazareth to just one goal during that key 15-minute frame.
Senior
Anthony Basile scored a pair of goals for Nazareth in the fourth quarter and Lippert scored for the second time in the game to supplement the Nazareth offense.
Stevens generated 55 total shots to Nazareth's 40.
Tim Vinton won 17 of 29 face-offs and had seven ground balls to go over 100 for the season. Each team scored twice on extra man. White had seven ground balls for Stevens in addition to his 15 saves.
Eric Almquist played goalie for Nazareth and was credited with 10 saves.
Nazareth plays its next two games on the road -- Tuesday at RIT at 6 p.m. and Wednesday at Houghton at 7. The Golden Flyers also are back home Saturday to play Sage at 1 p.m.
