ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Second-ranked RIT dominated Nazareth Tuesday in a non-conference men's lacrosse match on the Tigers' artificial turf field. Leading 9-3 at halftime, RIT scored 10 more times in the second half to take 19-6 triumph over the Golden Flyers.
RIT, ranked second nationally in the most recent United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association poll, improved to 14-1 overall, while Nazareth dropped to 4-10. The Golden Flyers return to Empire 8 Conference action Wednesday with a game at Houghton at 7 p.m. Nazareth also hosts Sage Saturday in its final home game at 1 p.m.
RIT had several statistical advantages, notably in generating a 49-27 edge in shots and by causing 29 Nazareth turnovers. The Golden Flyers were successful on just 15 of 25 clearing attempts as RIT wreaked havoc with its aggressive defense. Ten different players scored for the Tigers, including four goals from two different long-sticks -- Trevor Smyth (3) and Matt Pogue (1) -- and six goals and two assists from attackman Shawn Nally.
Jeremy Jacob had two goals and one assist for Nazareth and
Jon Parrinello scored twice.
Anthony Basile and
Colin McElligott were the other goal scorers.
The Golden Flyers played a competitive first quarter with Jacob scoring both of his goals and Parrinello converting a pass from
Matthew Vanliew to make the score 4-3. RIT's Damon Currie scored with 4:14 left in the first quarter to touch off a 10-goal scoring spree for the Tigers that ended with 6:35 left in the third quarter with RIT comfortably on top 14-3.
Parrinello's second goal of the game, off a pass from Jacob with 2:10 left in the third, broke a Nazareth scoring drought that lasted more than 30 minutes of game time.
The Tigers tallied five more goals in the fourth quarter while Nazareth countered with an extra-man score from Basile and an unassisted goal by McElligott.
Tim Vinton took most of the Nazareth face-offs and went 12 for 25 with six ground balls.
Eric Almquist played most of the game in goal and contributed 11 saves.
