ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Ithaca used a five-goal flurry over a five-minute stretch of the fourth quarter Wednesday to pull away for a 16-10 non-conference men's lacrosse victory over the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth's third straight defeat dropped the Golden Flyers to 3-8 overall, while Ithaca won for the third straight time to improve to 7-2 overall.
Jon Lippert scored three goals for the Golden Flyers and
Jeremy Jacob,
Kevin Hussey and
Colin McElligott scored twice each, but the Golden Flyers had few defensive answers for Ithaca's Josh Della Puca, who scored seven times and added two assists.
The Bombers never trailed in the game and had a seemingly comfortable 9-3 lead after Ryan Ozvath scored early in the third quarter. Lippert scored for Nazareth two minutes later to touch off a six-goal flurry for the Golden Flyers that ended with score tied at 9-9 following Hussey's goal with 4:16 left in the third quarter.
Ithaca scored the last two goals of the period, including an extra-man tally by Connor Brumfield with just :09 left in the period to regain the lead at 11-9.
Jack Crowley scored unassisted for the Golden Flyers early in the fourth quarter to make it 11-10, but Ithaca controlled the possession time thereafter and scored five unanswered goals to gradually pull away for the win. Della Puca scored twice during the flurry and added an assist.
Nazareth got first-period goals from Jacob and Hussey, but surrendered a goal to Della Puca with just :06 left in the period to fall behind 3-2. The Bombers took control with five goals in the second period while Jacob scored for Nazareth.
In the third period, Lippert scored all three of his goals and McElligott had both of his to fuel Nazareth's rally.
Jon Roth was credited with the assist on Hussey's game-tying goal.
Ithaca had advantages in shots (39-32), ground balls (44-40) and face-offs (15-14). Nazareth struggled clearing with just a 15-for-27 success rate to go with 23 turnovers.
Tim Vinton won 12 of 25 face-offs for Nazareth and scooped up seven ground balls.
Matthew Vanliew,
Tate Martinez and
Keaton Doon each had five ground balls.
Eric Almquist had 14 saves with 10 coming in the second half.
Nazareth is back home Saturday for an Empire 8 Conference game at 12 p.m.
