Tortora Breaks Hits Record in Empire 8 Split

ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Marissa Tortora had an RBI single in the fourth inning to break the career hits record for the Nazareth College softball team and the Golden Flyers went on to post a 6-4 victory over Alfred University in an Empire 8 game Saturday afternoon. The Saxons bounced back to win 3-0 in the nightcap to salvage a split in the doubleheader.

Tortora's hit gave her 138 for her career breaking the record of 137 set by Maureen Rogers '16 who played from 2013-16.

In game one, Alfred (18-16 overall, 9-5 E8) scored twice in the second inning to take the early lead before Nazareth (11-17, 3-5) cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the inning as senior Madison Joseph led off the inning with her sixth home run of the season on the first pitch of the inning.

In the third inning, the Golden Flyers took the lead for good with a three-run rally. Sophomore Janelle Walters started the inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Allison Smith.

Tortora reached on an error that allowed Walters to score to tie the game at 2-2.

With two outs, junior Kristen Simmons singled down the line to score Tortora before her sister, freshman Sarah Simmonds doubled to the gap in right center field. Kristen Simmons scored on the play to give Nazareth the 4-2 lead.

The Golden Flyers added two more runs in the fourth. Sophomore pitcher Gabriella Corasaniti singled to start the inning and senior Delaney St. George pinch ran and promptly took second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Mackenzie Kapp doubled to the fence in left center field to score St. George and Walters followed with a single to put runners on the corners.

With two outs, Tortora belted a single to centerfield to score Kapp and break the hits record as Nazareth took a 6-2 lead.

Alfred added a pair of runs in the sixth but Nazareth held on for the victory. Corasaniti scattered 10 hits and struck out two batters to pick up her sixth win of the season.

In the second game, Alfred broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning with an unearned run after a hit and a fielding error. The Saxons added a pair of runs in the sixth to extend the lead.

Both Walters and Allison Smith had three hits each in the game as the duo at the top of the batting order combined for six of the eight Nazareth hits in the contest.

Nazareth is back in action Tuesday with another Empire 8 home doubleheader as Elmira comes to Rochester with the first game scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
