CORTLAND, NY – Freshman Emma Robinson scored two of her team-leading three goals in the first half to give the Nazareth College women's lacrosse team an early 2-1 lead but SUNY Cortland rallied for seven consecutive goals and went on to post a 17-6 victory Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game.
Nazareth (5-5) scored in the first 27 seconds of the game to take the early lead as Robinson took a pass from sophomore Jordan Knapp and fired a low bouncing shot past the Cortland (6-3) goalie.
After the Red Dragons tied the game at 1-1, Robinson scored her second of the game at the 19:10 mark with a pass from junior Lily Aldrich to give the Golden Flyers a 2-1 advantage.
Cortland rebounded to score the next seven straight goals to surge ahead 8-2 before freshman Lauren Caldwell scored an unassisted goal to stop the run. The goal was set up by senior Kyra Kempney who intercepted a pass on a clear attempt and raced up the field into the offensive zone to help set up the goal.
Cortland added two more goals and took a 10-3 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Robinson netted her third goal of the game to start the period but the Red Dragons regained control and scored seven of the next eight goals.
Sophomore Callahan Lyon scored in the middle of the second half run and senior Kellie Byrne scored a free position goal with 8:30 left to play to cap the scoring.
Kempney finished with a team leading five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior Brianna Rizzari made 11 saves in the Nazareth goal.
The Golden Flyers return home Saturday for an Empire 8 game against Hartwick. The contest is the second half of a lacrosse doubleheader with the Nazareth men taking on Utica at noon and the women's game scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
