ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Mackenzie Kapp hit a three-run walk-off home run to win game two as the Nazareth College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader over Alfred State Thursday afternoon on Flyers Field.
Kapp's homer to left centerfield gave the Golden Flyers (10-16) an 8-0 win in five innings and Nazareth received a strong pitching performance from sophomore Gabriella Corasaniti who struck out a career-high nine batters to lead the Golden Flyers to a 9-3 win in the opener.
In the opener, Alfred State (7-12) scored first with a solo home run in the top of the first inning and the Pioneers took a 3-0 lead with two more runs in the fourth.
Nazareth answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning and took the lead in the fifth as senior Marissa Tortora and junior Kristen Simmons each hit solo home runs to give Nazareth a 4-3 lead.
The Golden Flyers broke the game open in the sixth with a five-run inning on the strength of consecutive singles by freshmen Sarah Simmons and Aubrin Smith as well as sophomore Katherine Ruoff.
Corasaniti finished with three runs allowed on four hits with two walks and nine strike outs to earn her fifth win of the season.
In the nightcap, Nazareth scored single runs in the second and third innings for the early lead and pushed ahead 4-0 with a pair of runs in the fourth.
In the fifth inning, Sarah Simmons walked to start the inning, stole second and took third on a wild pitch. Ruoff walked and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Junior Jessica Mount singled up the middle to score one run and then Kapp stepped up and cracked first career home run to win the game.
Junior Kylie Smith allowed three hits and struck out five batters in the shutout victory.
The Golden Flyers return to Empire 8 play Saturday with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader against Alfred University.
