A 20-hit Attack Leads Softball to Sweep over Brockport

BROCKPORT, NY – Sophomore Katherine Ruoff was 2-for-2 with five runs batted in in the opener and senior Marissa Tortora had three hits in the nightcap to lead the Nazareth College softball team to a pair of wins over SUNY Brockport in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday at the Clark V. Whited Complex.

Nazareth (7-11) rallied for a 9-7 win in the first game and took an early lead in a 6-1 win to complete the sweep in game two.

Brockport (10-10) took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one but the Golden Flyers answered with two runs in the second inning and four in the third frame to surge ahead 6-4.

The Golden Eagles regained the lead with three runs in the fourth but Nazareth tied the game at 7-7 with a single run in the fifth.

A two-run inning in the sixth sealed the win for Nazareth.

Tortora walked to lead off the sixth and with one out, junior Kristen Simmons walked to put two runners on base. Freshman Sarah Simmons singled to load the bases and Ruoff delivered a two-run single to right to plate the go-ahead runs.

Sarah Simmons was 2-for-3 and junior Jessica Mount was 2-for-4 with three RBI while Ruoff was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs and five RBI to lead the 9-hit Nazareth attack.

In game two, The Golden Flyers broke open the scoreless game in the third with three runs. Sophomore Janelle Walters started the rally with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Allison Smith.

Tortora doubled to score Walters and senior Madison Joseph connected for her fifth homer of the season to add two more runs.

Nazareth added two more runs in the fifth when the Simmons sisters hit back-to-back singles to score one run and starting pitcher Gabriella Corasaniti delivered a two-out single to score Kristen Simmons for the 5-0 Nazareth lead.

Each team scored in the seventh to close out the game.

Tortora and Sarah Simmons were each 3-for-4 while Kristen Simmons had a pair of hits as Nazareth produced 11 hits in the game.
