ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman Sarah Simmons and sophomore Katherine Ruoff had two hits each in the first game and senior Marissa Tortora added a 3-for-3 effort in game two but it was not enough as the Nazareth College softball team dropped a pair of Empire 8 conference games to crosstown rival St. John Fisher Friday afternoon on a rainy day at Flyer Field.
St. John Fisher (15-12 overall, 6-0 E8) scored four times in the seventh inning to break open a close game to win 7-0 and then scored three times in the final inning of game two to post a 6-2 victory over the Golden Flyers (7-13, 1-3).
In the opener, The Cardinals scored single runs in the second fifth and sixth innings and held a slim 3-0 lead headlining into the final frame before a four-run rally with all four runs being unearned.
Nazareth put a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the seventh but was unable to score.
Simmons and Ruoff led the way offensively with two hits each and sophomore Gabriella Corasaniti pitched well allowing just three earned runs, not walking a batter and striking out five as she pitched the complete game for the Golden Flyers.
After a condensed between games break due to the rain, St. John Fisher scored one run in the second and two more in the third to take an early 3-0 lead.
Nazareth trimmed the lead with a run in the fourth and another run in the fifth.
In the fourth, Tortora tripled to start the inning and came home with a sacrifice fly by senior Madison Joseph. The Golden Flyers loaded the bases but could not push across another run.
In the fifth, sophomore Janelle Walters singled to lead off the inning and moved into scoring position on a ground out. Tortora followed with a single to score Walters and cut the lead to 3-2.
The Cardinals scored three times in the seventh with one hit in the inning to extend the lead.
Nazareth put a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the inning but could not score.
Tortora was 3-for-3 in the game with a triple, a run scored and a run batted in while freshman Allison Smith finished 2-for-2 for Nazareth.
The Golden Flyers return to action Saturday with an Empire 8 doubleheader at Houghton and return home for a non-conference matchup against Buffalo State Tuesday.
