ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Vassar rallied from a two-sets-to-none deficit Saturday to win the final three sets in decisive fashion as the Brewers edged the Golden Flyers in a five-set men's volleyball match. Vassar won by scores of 23-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-9, 15-7 to improve to 10-7 overall and 3-3 in United Volleyball Conference action. Nazareth is 10-10 overall and 2-5 in the UVC. Later in the day, Nazareth defeated Mount St. Joseph in a three-set non-conference match by scores of 25-18, 26-24, 25-21.
After dropping the first two sets, Vassar had just two hitting errors in the final three sets with 33 kills for a .689 hitting percentage. The Brewers had six kills on seven attempts in the fifth set with Kevin Ros recording three of his match-high 13 kills. Vassar led 10-7 in the fifth set after
Zachary Gillard recorded a kill for the Golden Flyers, but the Brewers recovered to score the final five points to clinch the match.
The Golden Flyers had 30 of their 53 kills in the first two sets. They were able to take the first set behind five kills from Gillard. the score was tied at 23-23 when Nazareth closed with a kill by
Luis Vazquez and a combined block from
Joe Crosby and
Ethan Ross.
Nazareth pulled away in the second set to take a seemingly safe lead as Gillard produced three more kills and
Sean Dillon posted four of his tea-best 12 kills. Nazareth led 23-20 following a Vassar service error and got the last two points on a kill by Gillard and a Vassar ball-handling error.
In addition to 12 kills rom Dillon and 11 from Gillard, Ross had nine kills and
Antonio Sargent had eight. Gillard added 12 digs and
Tyler Farnung totaled 29 assists.
In the second match, Nazareth got 12 kills from
Antonio Sargent and eighth each from Dillon and Ross. Farnung amassed 28 assists.
The second set proved to be a key turning point as Nazareth had deficits of 14-10 and 15-11 before rallying. Sargent had six of his kills in the set as Nazareth had 16 overall. Kills by Gillard and Dillon lifted Nazareth to a 24-21 lead before MSJ rallied to tie the set at 24-24. Nazareth got the last two points on a service error and an attacking error.
Nazareth is off next week and plays next on March 20 at Elmira at 7 p.m.
