CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Host Cortland scored seven times in the second quarter to erase an early deficit as the Red Dragons outscored the Golden Flyers in a non-conference men's lacrosse game Saturday, 13-7.

The victory was the first of the season for the Red Dragons against two defeats. Nazareth dropped to 1-3.

Matthew Vanliew and Jack Crowley each scored two goals for Nazareth, but the Golden Flyers were stymied by Cortland goaltenders Jon Vargas and Marc Esposito, who combined to make 19 saves. Eric Almquist, making his third straight start, made 15 saves for Nazareth.

Both of Vanliew's goals came in the first quarter, with the second coming with 11 seconds left to give the Golden Flyers a 3-2 lead. Vanliew then assisted Jeremy Jacob on the first goal of the second quarter for a 4-2 Nazareth advantage. The momentum changed after that as a Cortland goal by Brandon Stiles started a string of six straight tallies that ended with the Red Dragons on top 8-4. Terrence Haggerty scored three times during that flurry and Dante Yacavone twice.

Jon Lippert scored for Nazareth with 2:17 left in the period to trim the lead to 8-5, but Cortland countered with a goal with :07 left in the half to make it 9-5 and to start another flurry.

Nazareth was able to generate 28 shots in the second half, but was turned away time and again by Vargas and Esposito, who made 13 saves in the second half. Nazareth was held off the scoreboard until the closing minute when Crowley and Tristan Gosselin each converted.

Nazareth finished with 50 shots to Cortland's 49. Cortland had a 40-33 advantage in ground balls. Nazareth's Tim Vinton won 14 of 23 face-offs and collected eight ground balls.

The Golden Flyers play their next two games in Florida against non-conference foes UMass-Boston (Tuesday at 5 p.m.) and Western New England (Friday at 7 p.m.). Both games will be played at the University of Tampa.
