TAMPA, Fla. -- Nazareth dominated UMass.-Boston Tuesday in a non-conference men's lacrosse game as the Golden Flyers scored 10 times in the opening quarter on their way to a 26-6 triumph over the Beacons.
In the first-ever men's lacrosse meeting between the two schools in a game played at the University of Tampa, Nazareth improved to 2-3 overall, while UMass.-Boston dropped to 1-3.
Twelve different players scored goals for the Golden Flyers, led by
Kevin Hussey, who had a career-best seven.
Drew McNerney added a career-best five goals with one assist. Four others had two goals --
Anthony Basile,
Tristan Gosselin,
Tate Martinez and
Jon Roth.
Colin McElligott,
Joe O'Hare and
Matthew Vanliew each had one goal and two assists.
Griffin Avery,
Jon Lippert and
Nik Holdsworth also scored.
UMass.-Boston scored the first goal of the game and the score was tied 2-2 early in the quarter before Nazareth erupted for nine straight goals to go up 11-2 early in the second quarter. The Golden Flyers had seven more goals in the second quarter to build a 17-3 halftime advantage and the lead grew to 22-4 after three quarters.
The Golden Flyers were able to substitute freely in the second half with Holdsworth and O'Hare each netting their first career goals.
Nazareth dominated other statistical categories as well.
Tim Vinton won 18 of 22 face-offs and had a game-high 13 ground balls. Nazareth had a 60-24 advantage in shots.
Eric Almquist played the first half in goal and made three saves. lex Winkler and
David Walk saw action in the second half.
The Golden Flyer play again Friday against Western New England at the University of Tampa at 7 p.m.
