Fourth Quarter Flurry Gives Men’s Lacrosse First Win

ROCHESTER, NY – Freshman Matthew Vanliew scored three of his team-leading five goals in the fourth quarter and fellow freshman Jon Roth added all three of his goals in the final quarter to lead the Nazareth College men's lacrosse team to an 18-6 victory over The College at Brockport Monday afternoon in a non-conference game at Nazareth.

Brockport (0-2) held a slim 2-1 lead after the first 15 minutes of action as sophomore Jeremy Jacob scored for Nazareth (1-2) 36 seconds into the contest.

It was all Nazareth in the second quarter as the Golden Flyers outscored Brockport 6-0 in the period and took a 7-2 lead into the halftime intermission. In the period, junior Kevin Hussey scored three times, Vanliew added two goals and senior Anthony Basile also scored twice for Nazareth.

The teams traded goals in the third quarter with Hussey scoring twice and Basile adding a man-up goal as the Golden Flyers held a 10-5 edge going into the final quarter.

Freshman Tate Martinez started the fourth quarter scoring for Nazareth with his first career goal.

After Brockport scored to keep the differential at five, Nazareth exploded for six goals in a span of three minutes to break the game open as the Golden Flyers raced to a 17-6 lead. Vanliew scored three times in the run, Roth had a pair of goals and Basile notched his fourth goal of the game.

Roth added a late goal to cap the scoring as Nazareth ended the game scoring 10 of the final 12 goals.

Freshman Eric Almquist was outstanding in the Nazareth goal as he finished with 17 saves to earn his first career victory.

Vanliew ended up with 10 points on five goals and five assists, Hussey added six points with four goals and two assists and Basile had four goals and an assist for five points. Junior Tim Vinton had 12 face-off wins and six goundballs.

Nazareth will be on the road for the next four games starting with a Saturday game at SUNY Cortland before playing a pair of games in Florida with UMass-Boston on the 12th and Western New England on the 15th.
