ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nineteen different players had goals Saturday for host Nazareth as the Golden Flyers opened the Empire 8 Conference portion of their men's lacrosse schedule with a 28-0 victory over Elmira.
Senior
Mike Riis scored three goals and added an assist and
Trevor Crawford,
Nik Holdsworth,
Kevin Hussey,
Jeremy Jacob,
Tate Martinez,
Drew McNerney and
Jon Parrinello scored twice each as Nazareth improved to 3-5 overall following the third shutout win in program history. Elmira dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the E8. Nazareth's previous shutout victories both came against Houghton -- in 2014 and 2015.
The final statistics validated the final score as Nazareth had large advantages in shots (71-9), ground balls (80-27) and face-offs (27-4). Elmira also committed 30 turnovers.
The tone was set early as Nazareth unleashed 26 shots in the opening quarter and produced nine goals. Hussey had two goals and three assists in the 15-minute flurry and Parrinello netted his first career goal. Sophomore
Jesse Rubel also scored his first goal of the season.
Nazareth scored five more times in the second quarter, highlighted by the first career goal for junior long-stick
Joe Fisher. Riis also delivered his first goal of the game. Nine more goals came in the third quarter with freshmen
Cole Moore and
Trevor Crawford breaking through for the first time. Sophomore
Dakota Allis also had his first goal of the season and junior
Griffin Avery his second.
The fourth quarter featured two goals for Holdsworth and one each for
Ismael Cisse, Crawford and
Tate Martinez.
Junior
Tim Vinton and freshman
Jared Miglorie took most of the face-offs and each won 11 of 12 draws with Vinton collecting a game-high nine ground balls.
The victory also was the 20th straight without a loss for the Golden Flyers against Elmira. Nazareth continues its Empire 8 Conference schedule Wednesday with a game at St. John Fisher at 7 p.m.
