St. Lawrence shoots down Nazareth, 15-10

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting St. Lawrence outscored Nazareth 10-2 in the second and third quarters Saturday to surge past the Golden Flyers in a non-conference men's lacrosse match for a 15-10 victory.

The Golden Flyers dropped to 0-2 following the game that was played in a steady snowfall. St. Lawrence was playing its season opener.

Brian Cunningham and Mike Donnelly each scored five goals for the Saints, who prospered from a 50-33 advantage in shots and forced 17 Nazareth turnovers.

Nazareth had leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 in the first quarter behind goals from Jon Lippert, Jack Crowley and Anthony Basile, but Donnelly scored for St. Lawrence before the first quarter ended to tie the score at 3-3. Cunningham then scored four times in the second quarter and Donnelly scored twice as the Saints outscored Nazareth 6-1 to gain control and a 9-4 advantage through 30 minutes. The Saints tacked on four more goals in the third quarter -- including two by Jack Hennessey -- to expand the lead to 13-5 heading into the fourth quarter.

Nazareth rallied to score five goals in the fourth quarter, including two by Crowley, but the Golden Flyers couldn't overcome the big deficit.

For Nazareth, Crowley finished with three goals and Basile had two. Tristan Gosselin, Tim Vinton, Matthew Vanliew and Kevin Hussey also scored goals in addition to Lippert.

Freshman Eric Almquist made his first career start in goal and had 20 saves. Vinton went 17 for 28 on face-offs and had a game-high nine ground balls. For St. Lawrence, Donnelly had three assists in addition to his five goals and goalie Alex Terry had 10 saves.

Nazareth is home again Monday for a non-conference clash against Brockport at 4 p.m.
