Late Runs Cost Men’s Volleyball at MIT

CAMBRIDGE, MA – Ethan Ross, Zachary Gillard and Antonio Sargent finished with eight kills each for the Nazareth College men's volleyball team but late runs by MIT in each set led to a 3-0 loss for the Golden Flyers Saturday afternoon in the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) match at MIT.

Nazareth (8-9 overall, 1-4 UVC) had a slim 23-22 lead late in the first set before surrendering the final three points to MIT (12-4, 4-3) to fall 25-23. The Golden Flyers were leading again in the second set 23-22 but MIT rallied for four of the final five points to take the 26-24 win and a 2-0 edge in the match.

In the third set, Nazareth was down 12-13 after a Sean Dillon kill before the Engineers went on a run to score seven of eight points to take a commanding 20-13 lead. After a service error made it 20-14, MIT scored five of the final six points to secure the 25-15 set win and the 3-0 match victory.

Ross, who finished with eight kills on 10 swings for a .800 percentage was tied for the team lead with Gillard and Sargent with eight kills each. Gillard added nine digs and Luis Vazquez also registered nine digs while Tyler Farnung handed out 31 assists.

Nazareth will compete next at Medaille Wednesday night and then host Sage, Mt. St. Joseph and Vassar over the weekend in Kidera Gymnasium.
