Wind Caps Weekend with 21 Points in win over Utica

ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Brendan Wind put together another 20+ point performance leading the Nazareth College men's basketball team with 21 points as the Golden Flyers defeated Utica College 78-57 in an Empire 8 Conference game Saturday afternoon in Kidera Gymnasium.

Wind finished with 49 points on the weekend as he led Nazareth (17-5 overall, 11-2 E8) with 28 points Friday night against St. John Fisher.

The senior guard scored 11 points in the opening half and Nazareth used a 17-4 run to close the half with Wind chipping in four points during the run which gave the Golden Flyers a 40-23 halftime lead.

The teams traded baskets early in the second half before Wind sparked another run as he and fellow senior Tyler Stenglein combined for nine consecutive points to extend the Nazareth lead to 23 points.

After Utica (12-9, 6-7) scored to stop the 9-0 run, Wind buried a 3-pointer to give the Golden Flyers a 24-point lead at 62-38 with 11 minutes to play.

Freshman Zach Stenglein hit a jumper with 1:36 on the clock for the largest lead of the game at 25 points before Utica added a pair of late baskets for the final score.

Wind led four players into double-digit scoring with his 21 points while Tyler Stenglein added 17, Chris Jones and Jake Burgio each added 10 points. Burgio led Nazareth with nine rebounds and Wind led the team with four assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

Nazareth will host Houghton Friday night and play at Elmira Saturday before wrapping up the regular season a week from Tuesday at Alfred. The Empire 8 tournament begins Feb. 22.
