ANNANDALE, N.Y. -- Nazareth needed less than an hour to defeat host Bard in a United Volleyball Conference match Friday. The Golden Flyers won by scores of 25-11, 25-13, 25-8 to dominate the Raptors.
In the conference opener for both teams, Nazareth improved to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the UVC, while Bard dipped to 1-3 and 0-1. The victory enabled Nazareth's
Cal Wickens to reach his 700th career victory as coach of both the men's and women's teams. Now in his 15th season as the men's head coach, Wickens has a record of 336-126 for a .727 winning percentage. He has coached the Nazareth women's team for 16 seasons and has a record of 364-222 for a .621 winning percentage. That adds up to an overall record of 700-348 (.668).
In Friday's match, seniors
Zachary Gillard and
Ethan Ross each had eight kills and senior
Tyler Farnung totaled 25 assists and four blocks. The Golden Flyers had 34 kills as a team against just nine hitting errors in 59 attempts for an efficient .424 percentage.
Freshman
Jordan Hildreth added six kills and sophomore
Antonio Sargent and junior
Joe Crosby each had six.
Ross had five of his kills in the opening set as the Golden Flyers took control. Gillard had three kills in the second set and five more in the third. Hildreth also had five kills in the third set.
The Golden Flyers, winners of three straight, travel to Rhode Island net weekend for a tournament hosted by Johnson & Wales.
