Early Lead Slips Away for Men’s Volleyball

ROCHESTER, NY – The Nazareth College men's volleyball team rallied late in the first set and won a 29-27 decision with a kill by Zachary Gillard to take an early 1-0 lead in the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) match against New York University but NYU came back to win three straight sets to take the 3-1 decision in Kidera Gymnasium.

NYU (6-6 overall, 3-1 UVC) came back from the loss in the first set to win 25-21, 25-20 and 25-21 over the final three sets for the victory.

In the first set, Nazareth (8-8, 1-3) was down 18-15 late in the set but rallied to take a 22-21 lead and caused NYU to call a time out.

The teams traded points off the stoppage before Antonio Sargent recorded a kill to give Nazareth the 24-23 edge. NYU answered back with a kill before Nazareth regained the serve on a point for Jordan Hildreth. Ethan Ross served an ace.

Sean Dillon recorded a kill later to tie the set at 27-27 and a NYU attack error gave set point to the Golden Flyers. Gillard delivered a kill from a Tyler Farnung set for the win.

Gillard finished with a team-best 17 kills and had an impressive .364 attack percentage with 17 kills, five errors and 33 attempts. Sargent had 10 kills and Farnung led the Golden Flyers with 41 assists. Ross recorded three aces and Luis Vazquez led Nazareth with 10 digs.

The Golden Flyers return to action next weekend with a Saturday afternoon match at MIT.
