Nazareth falls to Stevens, 3-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth won the opening set against visiting Stevens but the second-ranked Ducks rallied to win the United Volleyball Conference match in four sets. The scores were 26-28, 25-20, 25-13, 25-13. Sophomore Antonio Sargent finished with a team-high 11 kills for the Golden Flyers.

Following the loss, Nazareth drops to 8-7 overall and 1-2 in UVC matches. Stevens improves to 12-1 overall and 3-0 in UVC contests with the victory.

In the opening set, the Golden Flyers recorded a hitting percentage of .400 with 16 kills and four errors on 30 attempts. The trio of senior Zachary Gillard, junior Joe Crosby, and Sargent tallied four kills apiece while junior Sean Dillon added three more kills. After trading points through much of the opening of the set, Nazareth used a short 3-0 scoring run to change a 16-16 tie into a 19-16 advantage. Crosby started the run with a kill, then teamed with Sargent for an assisted block. A kill by Sargent extended the Golden Flyers' lead to three points. The Ducks rallied to tie the score, but Nazareth used a kill from Dillon and Crosby and a hitting error by Stevens to claim the set.

The Golden Flyers converted on 12 kills in the second set and led 10-7 before the Ducks reclaimed the lead. Stevens opened the set with a 4-1 scoring run before Nazareth answered with a 9-3 run of its own. During the run, freshman Jordan Hildreth, Gillard, and Dillon had kills. Defensively, Crosby and Dillon had solo blocks while the tandems of Dillon and Gillard and Dillon and Sargent combined for assisted blocks. The Ducks turned their 12-10 deficit into a 14-12 advantage moments later. After trailing by as many as four points, 17-13, the Golden Flyers rallied to within 20-19 after a kill by Sargent.

Stevens limited Nazareth's attack opportunities in the third and fourth sets as the Golden Flyers had 17 total kills between the two sets. The Ducks were very efficient with 15 kills in each set and only four total hitting errors. Stevens finished the sets with hitting percentages of .480 and .667 in the third and fourth sets, respectively.

In addition to the 11 kills by Sargent, Gillard tallied eight kills while Dillon and Hildreth had seven kills apiece. Ross contributed six kills while Crosby chipped in four additional kills. Senior Tyler Farnung amassed a team-high 32 assists as the Golden Flyers' primary setter. Farnung also had two kills on three attempts. 

Nazareth returns to action on Sunday when the Golden Flyers host New York University at 2 p.m. in another UVC match.
