Nazareth, William Smith battle to 2-2 tie

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Mikaila Rubin scored a power play goal with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation Saturday as host Nazareth battled to a 2-2 women's hockey tie with William Smith at the Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.

The teams play again Sunday in the regular-season finale for both at 4 p.m. in Geneva. Nazareth will bring a record of 18-4-2 and a United Collegiate Hockey Conference record of 12-4-1 into Sunday's matchup. William Smith is 16-6-2 overall and 12-3-2 in the UCHC. With 26 points, William Smith is in second place in the conference standings, one point ahead of Nazareth. The Herons could clinch second place and the No. 2 seed for the upcoming conference tournament with a win or a tie Sunday. Nazareth will need a win to finish second.

Trailing 2-1 after two periods, the Golden Flyers were able to capitalize in the third following a tripping penalty to William Smith's Lindsay Brown. Rubin scored her 11th goal of the season on a rebound after the initial shot by Delaney Carle was saved by Herons' goaltender Olivia Williams. Emily Kromer also gained an assist on the play.

Each team had chances thereafter, but the game ended up in a five-minute overtime in which neither team could score.

Despite being outshot in the opening period 14-6, Nazareth was able to claim a 1-0 lead at 13:48 as Kromer scored off a rebound. Shanley Austin and Cristina Darby gained assists.

William Smith took the lead with a pair of goals in the second period -- by Julia Mings at 1:10 and by Gina Schibetta at 8:06.

Nazareth was able to pick up the intensity in the third period by outshooting the Herons 15-7 and getting the game-tying goal.

William Smith had a 35-30 edge in shots on goal overall, but the Herons went 0-for-3 on the power play. Adrianna Brehm made 33 saves in goal for Nazareth, while Williams made 28 saves for te Herons.
