OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Host Oswego rallied in sets two and three Wednesday to sweep the Golden Flyers in a non-conference women's volleyball match at the Max Ziel Arena. The Lakers won by scores of 25-15, 25-22, 25-23.
Oswego's victory snapped a 12-match losing streak against the Golden Flyers, whom they had not beaten since 1999. The Lakers are 14-6 overall, while Nazareth dropped to 9-9.
Nazareth managed just a .038 (26-21-132) hitting percentage compared to the Lakers' .157 (37-17-127). Senior
Melissa Newcomb had seven kills,
Danielle Synowski had six and
Delaney Martin five. Junior setter
Jessica Barry contributed 19 assists to go with 12 digs and three blocks and sophomore
McKenzie Hart had a match-best 22 digs.
After faltering in the first set, Nazareth had leads of 17-11 and 20-15 in the second set before Oswego rallied. The Lakers' Shauna O'Flaherty delivered five of her match-high 13 kills, including two kills in the late in the set to spearhead the rally.
In the third set, the teams were tied at 22-22, but Oswego closed out the match on the strength of kills by O'Flaherty and Melissa Lussier.
Nazareth resumes its Empire 8 Conference schedule with a pair of matches this weekend. The Golden Flyers host Alfred Friday at 5 p.m., then visit Houghton Saturday at 1.
