ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting St. Lawrence scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes left in the fourth quarter Wednesday as the Saints claimed a 2-1 non-conference field hockey victory over the Golden Flyers.
The Saints' Maggie Green scored her third goal of the season with 1:50 left in the fourth quarter and the Golden Flyers were unable to generate a shot thereafter. St. Lawrence closed out its season with a 6-11 overall record, while Nazareth dropped to 8-10 overall. Nazareth has one regular-season game left -- Saturday at St. John Fisher at 7 p.m. The Golden Flyers can clinch fourth place in the Empire 8 Conference standings with a victory.
Nazareth dominated the first quarter Wednesday by outshooting the Saints 10-1 with senior
Jennifer Hilts collecting her team-leading 14th goal of the season to give the Golden Flyers an early advantage. St. Lawrence shifted the momentum in the second and third quarters by outshooting the Golden Flyers 17-3 over that 30-minute stretch and getting the tying goal. Freshman Cricket Barnes netted the equalizing goal with 3:30 left in the half.
Each team had chances in the fourth quarter, none better than the penalty stroke opportunity by Nazareth's
Natalie L'Hommedieu with 7:54 left. She lifted a shot toward the upper left corner, but Saints' goalie Sydney Giacin made a diving save to preserve the 1-1 deadlock. Earlier in the quarter, St. Lawrence's Mckenzie Haberl had a shot that was knocked off the end line by Nazareth defender
Abbey Szumloz.
The game seemed ticketed for overtime until Green stick-handled down the right side and fired a shot that eluded Nazareth goalie
Amanda Chuttey, who finished with 14 saves. Giacin had 12 saves for the Saints.
