ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth honored its three volleyball seniors --
Delaney Martin,
Melissa Newcomb and
Danielle Synowski -- prior to Friday's Empire 8 Conference match against Hartwick and all three played key roles in the Golden Flyers' four-set triumph over the Hawks at the Kidera Gymnasium. The Golden Flyers won by scores of 25-17, 27-25, 24-26, 25-15 to clinch a berth in next month's Empire 8 Conference Tournament.
The Golden Flyers had a five-match winning streak snapped as they improved to 11-14 overall and 4-2 in conference matches. Hartwick dropped to 13-9 overall and 3-3 in the E8. The Golden Flyers host Elmira Saturday at 6 p.m. in their final conference match, but they have already clinched an E8 playoff spot for the 14th straight time. The tournament is Nov. 8-9 at St. John Fisher, which clinched the top seed Friday with a three-set win over Elmira.
Against Hartwick Friday, Nazareth's trio of Martin, Newcomb and Synowski combined for 46 of the team's 58 kills. Newcomb had a match-best 17 against just three hitting errors in 34 attempts for a .412 percentage. Martin added 15 kills and Synowski had 14 to go with 15 digs.
Nazareth led 14-9 in the opening set, before Hartwick rallied to tie the set at 14-14. Nazareth closed the set with an 11-3 scoring run as Newcomb posted eight of her kills.
The second set proved pivotal as neither team led by more than three points. Hartwick's Colette Maloney had a kill to put the Hawks up 25-24, but Nazareth got a pair of kills from Synowski and one from sophomore
Olivia Quick to take the set.
Hartwick reversed fortunes in the third set in rallying from a 24-23 deficit to take the final three points. Nazareth left little doubt in the fourth set in racing to an 8-1 lead, fueled by a pair of service aces by Quick, who finished with five for the match to go with nine digs. Synowski added four more kills in the final set and Martin had three as Nazareth pulled away.

Jessica Barry played well in amassing 45 assists and sophomore libero
McKenzie Hart had 20 digs.
Toria Betelek led Hartwick with 14 kills and a .440 hitting percentage. Kayley Ericson had 38 assists and Katie Boak had a match-high 24 digs
