Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y. – The Nazareth College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday on the second day of competition at the Clarkson Invitational. The Golden Flyers fell 3-0 to St. Lawrence and then dropped a 3-0 match to host Clarkson.
Against Clarkson (20-3), the Golden Flyers (10-13) lost by set scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-19. In the St. Lawrence match, Nazareth fell by scores of 25-16, 26-24, 26-24.
Against St. Lawrence, senior Danielle Synowski had 10 kills for the Golden Flyers and senior Delaney Martin had eight. Junior Julia Cavanaugh contributed six kills and sophomore McKenzie Hart had 25 digs.
After dropping the first set, Nazareth trailed 22-15 in the second set before coming back to tie the score at 24-24. Three ills by Janay Douglas and two by Synowski helped fuel the Golden Flyers' rally. The Saints, however, prevailed on a kill by Natalie Piper, who finished with a match-best 17 kills, and a Nazareth attacking error.
In the third set, Nazareth was down 24-20, but tied the set at 24-24 with the help of two more kills by Synowski. St. Lawrence clinched the set and the match on kills by Piper and Amanda Teppo.
Against Clarkson, Martin led Nazareth with nine kills while junior Jessica Barry had 24 assists, five blocks and 10 digs. Senior Melissa Newcomb had four aces and Hart finished with 17 digs. Sophomore Olivia Quick added 10 digs for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth returns home for three consecutive matches starting with Rochester Wednesday night and continuing with Empire 8 matches against Hartwick at 6 p.m. Friday and Elmira at 6 p.m. Saturday.
