POTSDAM, NY – Seniors Danielle Synowski and Melissa Newcomb had 11 kills each and sophomore McKenzie Hart added 30 digs but the Nazareth College women's volleyball team let a 2-1 lead slip away as Geneseo rebounded to post a 3-2 victory Friday night on the first day of the Clarkson Invitational.
Geneseo (13-8) won the opening set 25-17 but Nazareth (10-11) came from behind to post a 26-24 win in the second set and then dominated the third set 25-15 to take the 2-1 lead in the match. The Knights rallied for a 25-16 win in the fourth set to force the tire-breaker fifth set. Geneseo jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 15-7 victory to win the match.
Synowski and Newcomb led the offense with their 11 kills each while Hart was the top defender with her 30 digs. Synowski chipped in 20 digs and Newcomb added 10 digs while junior Jessica Barry led the way with 36 assists and also contributed eight kills. Freshman Janay Douglas had eight kills and three blocks. Senior Delaney Martin added eight kills and 16 digs for the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth continues play Saturday in the tournament and will face St. Lawrence at 1 p.m. and take on host Clarkson at 5 p.m.
