ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior
Caleigh Cahoon scored on a penalty kick in the 17th minute for the lone tally of the game Saturday as host Nazareth defeated Sage, 1-0, in Empire 8 women's soccer action at Golden Flyer Stadium.
Cahoon's goal, her third of the season, lifted the Golden Flyers to their third win in a row and improved their overall record to 8-3-1. Nazareth is 3-0-1 in conference games. Sage dropped to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the E8. The Golden Flyers are tied for first place with Hartwick in the conference standings as each have identical records.
Nazareth controlled most of the action Saturday with advantages in shots (20-7) and corner kicks (6-0). The game remained scoreless, however, until freshman
McKayla Hughes was dragged down in the penalty area at the 16:56 mark. Cahoon stepped up and calmly drilled the subsequent penalty kick into the left side of the goal.
The Golden Flyers had other chances thereafter but Sage keeper Kallan Shertzer saved consecutive bids by Nazareth's
Ashley Plane in the 71st minute and a shot from the left wing by Ashley Slate caromed off the left goal post.Â
Shertzer finished with nine saves, while
Hannah Miller made four saves for the Golden Flyers for her fourth shutout of the season and 20th of her career.
The Golden Flyers are off until Saturday when they travel to Oneonta to take on Hartwick in a battle for first place at 3 p.m.
