Women’s Soccer Stays at the Top of the E8 Standings with Tie

ONEONTA, NY – The two top defenses in the Empire 8 showed why Saturday as the Nazareth College women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw with Hartwick College Saturday afternoon at Hartwick.

Both teams had limited opportunities as the defensive units did well to keep the shots from each team outside the 18-yard box.

Hartwick (9-3-2 overall, 3-0-2 E8) had its best chance in the second half after a defensive give away. A pass after the turnover into the box gave the Hawks a shot from within 12 yards but senior Hannah Miller made a nice save to keep Hartwick off the scoreboard.

Later in the half, Miller made another save on a shot from outside the box but moved the ball up the field quickly on the counter attack. A quick throw in in the Hartwick end of the field led to a shot by junior Lena D'Amico but the Hartwick goalie made the stop.

After a scoreless first two halves, the teams went to overtime.

In the first overtime period, sophomore Ashley Plane made a nice play on the ball in the box but a slid tackle by the goalie stopped the play. The rebound came out to senior Mia Strollo who fired a quick shot but the Hartwick keeper had recovered from the slide and made the save.

In the second overtime, Miller made a diving stop midway through the period and Nazareth had its best chances late in the final OT.

With two minutes left, a corner kick for the Golden Flyers resulted in a shot on the far post by freshman Megan McCraith but her shot went off the post and was cleared by Hartwick.

With seconds winding down, Nazareth earned another corner kick and opted for the short kick to the foot of freshman Danielle Christ who send a crossing pass into the box and to the foot of McCraith but once again, her shot was saved and time expired in the game.

Nazareth finished with 14 shots and Hartwick had 12. The Golden Flyers ended up with a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

Nazareth will face Utica Wednesday in a midweek conference game at Utica.
