DELHI, NY – Sophomores Sam Smyth and Zein Mohamed scored goals in a three-minute span early in the second half to help the Nazareth College men's soccer team open up a 3-0 lead and the Golden Flyers went on to post a 4-1 non-conference victory over SUNY Delhi Tuesday afternoon.
The Golden Flyers won for the fourth straight time and are 4-0-1 in their last five games to improve to 8-2-1 overall. They have outscored the opposition 16-4 over that stretch. Delhi is 4-6.
The game was scoreless until late in the first half when sophomore Adoniadis Savidis settled the ball outside the box following a corner kick and blasted it past Delhi keeper Noah Blake.
The Golden Flyers came out firing in the second half and sophomore Sam Smyth scored his sixth goal of the season after a header by Andrew Gengler deflected off the crossbar. Smyth knocked in the rebound. Less than three minutes later, Smyth gained the assist on Zein Mohamed's fourth goal of the season.
In the 70th minute, Gengler sclosed out the Nazareth scoring after intercepting a pass and scoring uncontested.
Delhi broke up the shutout with a goal in the 84th minute.
Nazareth held a 23-12 lead in shots including a 14-2 advantage in the first half, Senior Brian Wilkin made six saves in the Nazareth goal.
The Golden Flyers return to Empire 8 play Saturday with a 1 p.m. home game against Sage.
