HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Junior
Cody Green scored 14 points and senior
Jake Burgio added 11 Saturday for visiting Nazareth as the Golden Flyers dominated Houghton from start to finish in an Empire 8 Conference men's basketball game, winning 82-43.
It was the third straight win for the Golden Flyers, who improved to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Houghton dropped to 0-2 in the E8 and 1-10 overall.
Green's 14 points included four three-point baskets. Burgio added seven rebounds to a balanced stat sheet. The Stenglein brothers -- senior Tyler and freshman Zach -- each scored nine points. Senior
Chris Jones had eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds and junior Brandon Broderick had six points on a pair of three-point baskets.
The Golden Flyers were in control from the outset as they raced to a 16-4 lead in the first seven minutes as Green, Burgio,
Daniel Jacob and Brandon Wind each knocked down three-point shots. Broderick then hit two in a row in the midst of a scoring run that ended with Nazareth on top 28-6. Nazareth was up by as many as 28 points, 36-8, following a three-pointer by
Tyler Stenglein with less than five minutes to play in the first half. The Golden Flyers were up 41-19 at halftime.
Nazareth was comfortably ahead the rest of the way as everyone was able to log minutes in the second half. Sophomore
Matt Muncey played nine minutes and added six points, including 4-of-5 free throws.
The lopsided victory enabled the Golden Flyers to gain a weekend sweep of conference games as they also knocked off Hartwick Friday at home. They are back home next weekend for E8 games against Stevens Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Sage Saturday at 4.
