MARCY, N.Y. -- Nazareth split a pair of men's volleyball matches Friday as the Golden Flyers resumed their 2019 season at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by SUNY Poly.
Nazareth lost for the second time this season as Elms captured the last two sets of a competitive match to take a 3-1 victory over the Golden Flyers. Scores were 25-17, 14-25, 25-16, 25-20. Later, the Golden Flyes secured their first victory of the season by sweeping D'Youville by scores of 25-17, 25-13, 25-15.
The Golden Flyers, 1-2, play two more matches Saturday -- vs. Pratt and Wells at 1 and 5 p.m. respectively.
In Friday's first match, freshman
Jordan Hildreth and sophomore
Antonio Sargent each had nine kills and senior setter
Tyler Farnung produced 29 assists for Nazareth, but Elms' brother tandem of Jeremy Torres and Jovanny Torres combined for 32 kills to lead the way for the Blazers.
After dropping the first set, Nazareth came back to square the match as Hildreth had three kills in the second set and Sargent and
Ethan Ross each had two.
Hildreth produced a kill in the third set to draw Nazareth to within 15-13, but Elms closed the set by scoring 10 of the next 13 points. Nazareth also fell behind in the fourth set before rallying to tie the score at 17-17 following a service ace by Ross. Elms closed out the match by scoring eight of the final 11 points with the Torres brothers accounting for four of those points on kills.
Farnung also had nine digs and Ross and
Zachary Gillard each contributed six kills.
Against D'Youville, Nazareth dominated by posting a .483 hitting percentage (37-9-58), led by nine kills from Gillard and eight from Sargent.
In the first set,
Joe Crosby had four of his five kills to get the Golden Flyers off to a good start. Nazareth hit a monstrous .737 (16-2-19) to dominate the second set as Gillard and Sargent each had five kills and Hildreth added four. Nazareth had eight kills and three blocks to take the third set in convincing fashion. Farnung finished with 25 assists and Hildreth added seven kills.
