MARCY, N.Y. -- Nazareth made short work of Pratt Institute in a three-set men's volleyball match Saturday as the Golden Flyers continued play at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by SUNY Poly. Competing against Pratt for the first time ever, Nazareth won by scores of 25-8, 25-8, 25-17.
The Golden Flyers then improved to 3-2 overall with a four-set win over Wells by scores of 28-26, 25-18, 22-25, 25-16. Senior
Ethan Ross represented the Golden Flyers on the all-tournament team.
Nazareth posted a spectacular .576 (43-5-66) hitting percentage in dominating the match against Pratt.
Zachary Gillard and
Jacob Rhea each had eight kills and Ross and
Luis Vazquez each had seven. Freshman
Jason Proud compiled 21 assists.
Rhea, Ross and
Antonio Sargent each had four kills in the opening set as the Golden Flyers had a .667 hitting percentage (18-2-24). Nazareth added eight more kills without a hitting error to breeze in the second set. The third set was highlighted by three service aces for Sargent, who finished with four overall.
Against Wells, Gillard and Sargent were explosive for the Golden Flyers on the outside with 16 and 15 kills respectively. Gillard had a .306 hitting percentage with just five hitting errors on 36 swings. Sargent had just two hitting errors on 30 attempts for a .433 percentage. Ross added 12 kills as a middle blocker on 14 attempts for a .714 percentage.
Six of Ross' kills came in the opening set. He also recorded a service ace on set point. The set was tied at 26-26 when
Jordan Hildreth recorded a kill, followed by Ross' ace.
Gillard and Sargent each had five kills in the second set and Sargent had five more in the fourth set as Nazareth prevailed.
Tyler Farnung had a career-best 48 assists and Vazquez had 16 digs.
