ROCHESTER, NY – Less than a week after suffering its first home loss of the season, the Nazareth College women's hockey team came from behind to defeat Utica College 3-1 Friday night in a battle of two of the top teams in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) standings at the Bill Gray's Iceplex.
Utica (12-4-2 overall, 9-2 UCHC) took a 1-0 lead late in the first period skating with a two-man advantage after Nazareth (12-3-1, 8-3) took a pair of late penalties.
Midway through the second period, the Golden Flyers answered as Gabriella DeMeo fired a shot from the point and knotted the score at 1-1. Jessica Kollberg and Hailey Redders earned assists on the play.
Early in the third period, Nazareth earned its third power play of the game and took advantage as Nikolle Van Stralen scored from a Redders pass just 37 seconds into the period to give the Golden Flyers the 2-1 lead.
Nazareth continued to apply the offensive pressure and eight minutes later, Taylor Hudon knocked in the third Nazareth goal of the game and extended the lead to 3-1 as Emily Kromer added the assist on the play.
Late in the game, Utica applied the pressure including the final 1:25 with the extra skater and the empty net but goalie Adrianna Brehm made save after save to preserve the victory. Brehm finished with 28 saves including 11 in the final period to improve her record to 9-2-1 on the season.
The second game of the weekend series was postponed due to weather and will be made up at a later date.
