ALFRED, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth overcame a major upset bid by Alfred State Friday in a non-conference men's basketball game as the Golden Flyers outscored the Pioneers 16-11 in overtime to escape with an 86-81 victory.

Brendan Wind canned back-to-back three-point shots in overtime and finished with 12 points and eight assists to spearhead the Golden Flyers' overtime surge. Wind was one of five Nazareth players to score in double figures with
Jake Burgio leading the way with 18.
Chris Jones added 16 points and 15 rebounds and
Tyler Stenglein also had 16 points.
Stephen Gabel scored 11 points and went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in overtime. Nazareth improved to 11-3 overall following its seventh straight win.
In winning the Golden Flyers had to overcome a monster game from Alfred State's Tahaij Lewis, who scored 42 points and grabbed 21 rebounds.
Burgio scored 13 of his points in the first half as Nazareth took a seemingly safe 39-30 halftime lead. The lead grew to 13 points, 48-35, early in the second half after Gabel converted his only field goal of the game.
Lewis took over for the Pioneers in the second half by scoring 22 of his points and grabbing 10 of his rebounds. Alfred State finally tied the score at 52-52 when Lewis sank two free throws with 4:40 to go in regulation. Two more free throws by Lewis extended the lead to five points, 64-59, with 2:09 left.
Nazareth rallied and managed to take a two-point lead, 70-68, following
Tyler Stenglein's three-point play with :23 left. The game went to overtime tied at 70-70 after Alfred State's Juwan Toliver scored with :11 left.
Nazareth never trailed in the overtime and managed to secure control when Wind hit a three-pointer with 2:20 left, then another with 1:46 on the clock. The Golden Flyers then cashed in at the free throw line as
Tyler Stenglein hit two shots and Gabel canned six more.
The Golden Flyers are off Saturday, then returns to Empire 8 Conference play with a road game at St. John Fisher Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
