Golden Flyers (8-5 overall) suffer first E8 defeat, host Alfred Tuesday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth suffered its first Empire 8 Conference defeat of the season Saturday as Sage outscored the Golden Flyers 40-29 in the second half for a 78-62 victory.

The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Golden Flyers, who dropped to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play. Sage improved to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the E8.

Rachel Benedict posted her second double-double of the weekend as she combined 24 points with a game-high 15 rebounds. Demetria Woodard added 12 points and Lizzie Straub and Elizabeth White added 11 points each.

The Golden Flyers had no solution for the Gators' Emily Parslow, who scored a game-high 35 points with five three-pointers and a 14-for-16 effort from the free throw line.

Sage led 17-15 after one quarter and Gators extended their lead to as many as 12 points in the second quarter bore Nazareth rallied to within 38-33. Straub nailed a pair of three-point shots in the final 1:37 of the half to get the Golden Flyers closer.

In the third quarter, Nazareth used another three-pointer by Straub and two by Benedict to tie the score at 42-42 midway through the period. After Benedict's second trey, Parslow hit a three-pointer on the Gators ensuing possession and the Gators gradually pulled away from there. They led 58-48 heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Golden Flyers had opportunities to close the gap, but Sage got 11 more fourth-quarter points from Parslow, including eight free throws to stay comfortably ahead.

Although they shot just 36.8 percent (21-for-57) from the field, the Gators made 11 three-pointers in 29 attempts (37.9%). Nazareth went just 18-for-64 from the field (28.1%) with nine three-pointers.

The Golden Flyers are home again Tuesday against Alfred at 5:30 p.m.
