Box | Updated stats
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Despite a significant disadvantage in possession time and shots, Nazareth was able to control Sunday's men's soccer match were it counted most -- on the scoreboard. The Golden Flyers secured their first victory of the 2018 season by scoring once in each half for a 2-0 triumph over visiting Rensselaer at Golden Flyer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Jake Adams and freshman Zein Mohamed each scored for the first time for the Golden Flyers. Mohamed assisted on Adams' goal in the sixth minute and James Walsh picked up the assist on Mohamed's goal in the 64th minute.
  • The first goal came after RPI keeper Matt LaBranche made the initial save on a shot by Mohamed. The rebound, however, squirted loose and Adams took advantage by knocking the ball into an open net.
  • With Nazareth clinging to the one-goal lead in the second half, Mohamed netted the valuable insurance tally. After accepting a pass from Walsh, he lofted a shot from about 25 yards away on the left side and over the outstretched hands of LaBranche.
  • Junior Brian Wilkin, a first-team all-Empire 8 Conference all-star in 2017, gained his first shutout of the season by making eight saves. He received solid defensive help from backs Justin Pumputis, Connor Mann, Max Lichtman and Walsh.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Rensselaer dominated the time of possession and had a 19-7 edge in shots and a 14-2 advantage on corner kicks.
  • LaBranche made two saves for the Engineers before being relieved by Luke Brezak midway through the second half.
  • Adams generated three shots for the Golden Flyers, while Mohamed and senior AJ Muoio each had two.

  • Rensselaer also dropped a tough 1-0 overtime decision at Rochester Friday as the home team netted the game-winner with just :32 left in ot. The Engineers, of the Liberty League, finished 8-6-2 last season.
  • Nazareth played without sophomore defender Adrian Padilla, who received a red card in Friday's 1-0 loss to Brockport and had to sit out.
