CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Nazareth posted two more impressive volleyball results Saturday as the Golden Flyers completed a four-match sweep at SUNY Cortland's annual Red Dragon Invitational. Combined with Friday night wins over Oneonta and Stockton, Nazareth improved to 4-0 with a three-set sweep of Rowan (25-23, 25-16, 25-17) followed by a four-set victory over Cortland (23-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-18).
"Our passing and serving made a big difference," said Nazareth Coach
Cal Wickens. "The other teams were on their heels offensively because we were serving them off the court."
The Golden Flyers got strong play from their middle hitters as senior
Kelsey Milligan was named tournament MVP and junior
Melissa Newcomb was named to the all-tournament team.
The Golden Flyers hit a very efficient .299 (46-11-117) against Cortland and served up 15 aces in rallying from a first-set setback to dominate the final three sets. Newcomb had seven aces and senior
Celia Cordero added four more to go with 12 digs.
Senior
Madison Joseph blasted out 19 kills with just two hitting errors on 27 attempts as an outside hitter. She also had 13 digs. Senior
Carmen Sapp added nine kills and Milligan combined seven kills with five blocks.
Sophomore
Jessica Barry had 31 assists and sophomore
Savannah Bothner had 17 digs.
Against Rowan, Nazareth had 50 total digs with Bothner accounting for 12 and junior
Delaney Martin nine more. Newcomb had nine kills and three more service aces and Milligan and senior
Margorie Didas each had seven kills. Barry delivered 22 assists.
Nazareth travels to University of Rochester next weekend for an invitational tournament with matches against Wells Friday at 7 p.m., then SUNY Poly and Medaille on Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. respectively.
