PITTSFORD, N.Y. -- Nazareth's men's and women's cross country teams opened their season Friday at St. John Fisher's Early Season Invitational and each team finished fourth in their respective team competitions.
Competing on a 6-kilometer course, the men's team totaled 84 points to finish behind Geneseo (17), St. John Fisher (67) and Rochester (84). In the women's 4-kilometer race, Nazareth had 102 points and trailed Rochester (23), Geneseo (35) and St. John Fisher (81).
In the women's race, three freshmen set the pace for the Golden Flyers with
Sierra Kempney,
Hayley Cronin and
Claire Bargabos finishing 15th, 19th and 25th respectively. Kempney was clocked in 16:29.8, Cronin in 16:35.9 and Bargabos in 17:01.5.
Other competitors were sophomores
Lauren Guilfoil (37th, 17:25.5),
Deirdre Brett (38th, 17:30.5) and
Kaitlyn Dobbertin (58th, 19:24.0); senior
Eileen Shea (26th, 17:04.1); juniors
Maria Staehr (40th, 17:35.6) and
Megan Menz (56th, 19:09.2) and freshman
Claire Kubinski (53rd, 18:40.7).
Freshman Josh Tomaka was Nazareth's top male finisher, placing 11th in 21:14.9. Senior Andrew Gwynn and sophomore Michael Brown followed in 16th and 20th place respectively with times of 21:32.3 and 21:42.9.
Other competitors were sophomores Chris Celecki (21st place, 21:45.0) and Devyn Chase (32nd, 22:29.8); freshmen Josh Pomerleau (33rd, 22:34.9), Jake Suddaby (35th, 22:46.0) and Patrick Healy (40th, 23:58.0) and senior Jack Wessel (34th, 22:38.9).
Geneseo's Eddie O'Brien-Curcie won the race in 20:16.5.
Nazareth competes again next Saturday at the Hamilton Invitational.
