Brockport Edges Men's Soccer 1-0 In Season-Opener

Box
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Visiting Brockport used a first-half goal, coupled with a man-advantage for the entire second half, to hand Nazareth a 1-0 men's soccer defeat Friday night under the lights on the Artificial Turf.

It was the first match for both squads in the 2018 season. Nazareth returns to the pitch on Sunday, hosting Rensselaer at 1 p.m.

It was the visitors who scored the lone goal of the game on a failed clearance by the Golden Flyers defense in the 13th minute.  Following a header that ricocheted straight up in the air, Jason Hayes headed down a pass to Ayub Jeylani, who rocked a shot inside the far post from eight-yards out.

Nazareth's best chance in the opening half came at the foot of freshman Sam Smyth in the 24th minute as he got in behind the defense off a long ball and pushed a shot wide of the near post from outside the box.

The Golden Flyers put themselves at a big disadvantage just 23 seconds into the second half when Adrian Padilla picked up his second yellow card and was ejected, forcing Nazareth to play down a man for the rest of the contest.

Despite playing with 10 men, Nazareth was able to hang around in the contest.  Sophomore Jake Adams nearly tied the score at one apiece in the 76th minute, as he launched a shot off the outside of the post to put gasp in front of the large crowd.

Nazareth held a 5-4 edge in shots after 45 minutes, but were edged 8-7 after playing down the final 45 minutes. Jake Adams, Adoniadis Savidis and Zach Titus each registered two shots.

Junior Brian Wilkin was credited with one save between the pipes.
