HOUGHTON, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth dominated Houghton in an Empire 8 Conference women's lacrosse game Thursday as the Golden Flyers scored early and often in a 21-2 victory over the Highlanders at Burke Field.
The victory was the third straight for the Golden Flyers, who improved to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in E8 action. Houghton slipped to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Senior
Haley DeVona scored four goals, including the first tally of the game just 15 seconds in, to pace the Golden Flyers. Senior
Katie Carroll added three goals and two assists and sophomore
Maeghan O'Brien also scored three times. Sophomore
Addilys Geitner and freshmen
Tori Blazey and
Regan McGwin each scored twice.
Nazareth scored six times before the game was 10 minutes old. It was 14-0 before Houghton got on the scoreboard with 5:53 left in the first half. It was 16-1 at halftime. DeVona scored all four of her goals in the first half and O'Brien had all three of her goals.
Houghton scored the first goal of the second half, then Nazareth answered with the last five goals of the game.
Nazareth dominated the game statistically with large advantages in shots (36-11), ground balls (19-9) and draw controls (15-9). The Golden Flyers also converted on 4-of-5 free-position attempts.
Brianna Rizzari played the first half in goal and had three saves
Mackenzie Corbett had two saves in the second half. Each yielded one goal.
Nazareth plays again Saturday at home against Elmira in Empire 8 Conference action at 1 p.m.
