ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Alfred used a five-goal flurry between the second and third quarters Saturday to surge past Nazareth, 13-9, in a key Empire 8 Conference men's lacrosse match-up on the Golden Flyers' artificial turf field.

The victory, only the fifth by Alfred over the Golden Flyers in 30 meetings, boosted the Saxons' overall record to 7-5, including a 3-1 record in conference games. Nazareth dropped to 4-10 overall and 2-2 in the E8. Nazareth had won the previous 21 meetings with the Saxons dating back to 1997. It also was Alfred's second-ever road win over the Golden Flyers and first since 1990. Nazareth is home again Wednesday to host St. John Fisher at 4 p.m.

The game was tied 3-3 after one quarter. Then Alfred embarked on a five-goal scoring spree that bridged the second and third quarters to take a commanding 8-3 lead from which Nazareth couldn't recover. Alfred out-shot Nazareth 14-2 in the second quarter alone and scored three times to take a 6-3 lead into halftime. Alfred then scored the first two goals of the third quarter.

Nazareth staged a third-quarter comeback with a pair of goals by Anthony Basile and one by Jack Crowley slicing the deficit to 8-6. Alfred, however, then forced a turnover near the end of the quarter and scored a back-breaking goal with just :01 left in the third to go up 9-6.

Nazareth's desperate attempt to come back in the fourth quarter fell short as Alfred answered every challenge. After Paul Walter scored an extra-man goal with 8:28 left to cut the deficit to 10-7, Alfred scored just 12 seconds later as long-stick Shane Weber scooped up a loose ball and delivered his second goal of the game. Jon Lippert scored his second goal of the game later in the quarter only to have Alfred respond just 15 seconds later on Cale Donegan's third goal of the game.

Basile was Nazareth's primary offensive threat with three goals and one assist. Lippert scored twice and Crowley had a goal and an assist. Colin McElligott and Jacob Gray also had goals.

Alfred had four long-stick goals, including two by Weber, who also had five ground balls. Long-sticks Ben Cafolla and Frank Gavigan also scored.

Alfred had advantages in shots (43-28), ground balls (26-23) and face-offs (13-12). Andrew Leahey started in goal for Nazareth, but left midway through the first quarter with a leg injury. Alex Winkler replaced him and made 11 saves while allowing 11 goals. Drew Gardner played all 60 minutes for Alfred and made eight saves.
