ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting St. John Fisher overcame an early deficit to race past Nazareth Wednesday for an 11-8 men's lacrosse victory in Empire 8 Conference action at Golden Flyer Stadium.

The key conference win boosted Fisher's overall record to 9-5, including 3-2 in E8 action. Nazareth is 4-11 overall and 2-3 in conference play. The Golden Flyers have two games remaining and probably need to win both to reach next month's Empire 8 Conference Tournament. The Golden Flyers visit Utica Saturday at 1 p.m. and host Hartwick on April 28.

Sophomore Kevin Hussey, starting in place of the injured Anthony Basile, scored a career-best three goals, including Nazareth's first two in the opening quarter as the Golden Flyers were taking a 3-1 lead. Paul Walter also scored twice for Nazareth, including his 100th career goal late in the third quarter. Chris Murphy picked up his team-best 11th assist and freshman Owen Gonzalez had his first career point -- an assist -- in the second quarter.

Hussey's first goal came off an assist from Jon Lippert at 12:42. Then, after Fisher tied the score, Hussey scored again off a pass from Jeremy Jacob. An unassisted score by Jacob Gray followed to give the Golden Flyers a 3-1 lead midway through the opening period. Fisher, however, then scored the next four goals -- three in the first and one in the second quarter -- to go up 5-3 and never railed thereafter.

Nazareth also scored three times in the second quarter -- Jacob, Hussey and Walter -- but Fisher went up 8-6 at the break as the Cardinals' Andrew Rosso scored his second of four goals with 1:59 left.

The Golden Flyers went more than 22 minutes in the second half without scoring, while Fisher scored the only goal of the third quarter and tacked on two more in the fourth to go up 11-6. Lippert scored for Nazareth off an assist from Jacob to make it 11-7 and Walter scored again with 1:47 to close out the scoring.

Fisher had advantages in shots (39-27), ground balls (39-29) and face-offs won (14-8). Gavin Shaner won 8 of 20 faceoffs for Nazareth and collected five ground balls. Sophomore Alex Winkler made the start in goal and had 13 saves. For Fisher, Rosso had two assists in addition to his four goals. Jack Mulvihill, Danny Turck and Nicholas Miller each scored twice. Justin Townsend had nine saves in goal for the Cardinals.
