ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior
Haley DeVona scored four goals and added an assist and junior goalie
Brianna Rizzari had a career-high 17 saves to lift host Nazareth to a 10-6 women's lacrosse victory over the University of Rochester in non-conference action Wednesday on the Golden Flyers' artificial turf field.
The game served as a promotion for breast cancer awareness in honor of survivor Sue Behme, current UR coach and Nazareth coach from 2000-2008. Proceeds from the game were donated to the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester, which provides programs and services to local families facing a diagnosis of breast cancer. The game was the first of the season for the Yellowjackets, while Nazareth improved to 2-1 overall.
The Golden Flyers never trailed in the game as DeVona and sophomore
Maeghan O'Brien each scored before the game was two minutes old. UR's Maggie McKenna slashed Nazareth's lead in half with an unassisted score, but DeVona and O'Brien each scored again before halftime as the Golden Flyers led 4-2. Rizzari, meanwhile, excelled for Nazareth at the defensive end by making eight first-half saves, including two on free-position shots.
DeVona's goal with 2:17 left in the first half triggered for the Golden Flyers a seven-goal scoring run that ended with Nazareth in command, 10-2, with 7:14 left. O'Brien's third goal of the game, off an assist from DeVona, put Nazareth up 5-2 early in the second half. DeVona added two more goals -- her seventh and eighth of the season -- and
Jamie Martin had a goal on a free-position shot. Goals by sophomore
Bridget Collins and freshman
Jordan Knapp came just 48 seconds apart to close out the Nazareth scoring.
Rochester finished with a flurry, scoring the final four goals, including the second of the game for senior Jamison Seabury on a free-position shot with :58 left. Rizzari had nine more saves in the second half with four coming on UR free-position attempts. Rizzari has totaled 46 saves (14, 15 and 17) in Nazareth's first three games for a solid .590 save percentage.
Rochester had advantages in shots (30-24) and ground balls (23-18), while Nazareth won 11 draws to UR's seven. Junior defender
Kyra Kempney had four caused turnovers and two ground balls.
Nazareth plays again Saturday in another non-conference game at 13th-ranked William Smith at 1 p.m.
